How the VA Rates TBI

TBI is rated under Diagnostic Code 8045. The rating is based on three facets: cognitive impairment, emotional/behavioral dysfunction, and physical/neurological effects. Each facet is rated separately and combined. Many veterans are underrated because the examiner does not evaluate all three facets or misses secondary conditions.

Common TBI secondary conditions that qualify for separate ratings include: sleep apnea, PTSD, headaches/migraines, tinnitus, and depression.
