VA Sleep Apnea Claims

Sleep apnea is rated at 0%, 30%, 50%, or 100% depending on the severity and treatment required. Veterans using a CPAP machine are typically rated at 50%. Sleep apnea is often denied on initial claims because the VA requires an in-service diagnosis or a nexus connecting the condition to service.

Secondary service connection through PTSD, TBI, or military obesity is frequently successful. A private physician’s nexus letter connecting sleep apnea to a service-connected mental health condition can unlock a separate sleep apnea rating.
