How the VA Rates PTSD
The VA rates PTSD under Diagnostic Code 9411 using a five-level scale: 0%, 30%, 50%, 70%, or 100%. The rating is based on the frequency and severity of symptoms such as flashbacks, nightmares, hypervigilance, emotional numbing, avoidance, and social and occupational impairment.
Most veterans are underrated at 50% or 70% when the evidence supports 100%. The most common reason is that the C&P examiner did not capture the full severity of symptoms — particularly occupational and social impairment.
What a Higher Rating Means
The difference between 70% and 100% PTSD can be $1,500–$2,000 per month in additional compensation, plus eligibility for Individual Unemployability (TDIU) if you are unable to maintain substantially gainful employment.
