VA Claims Based on Military Sexual Trauma

Veterans who experienced military sexual trauma (MST) may file claims for PTSD, depression, anxiety, or other conditions connected to that experience. The VA applies special procedures for MST claims including alternative evidence rules — official military records are not required to establish the assault occurred.

Alternative markers of the in-service stressor include: requests for transfer, changes in performance, substance abuse records, buddy statements, and personal statements. The VA is required to seek any evidence that corroborates the veteran’s own statement.
